Girl Advisory Board
The Girl Advisory Board (GAB) is a group of Girl Scouts from Juniors through Ambassadors coming from all over the GSNENY council, who have united together to advocate on issues which they feel is important. For the 2012 – 2013 year, GAB has chosen to advocate on the behalf of children’s rights. The Girl Advisory Board is a unique opportunity to bring their personal insight and passion on a council-wide level. GSNENY is thrilled to have these young women with us, and to lead GSNENY into the future.
2012 – 2013 GAB Leadership Team
Chair: Maggie Porter
Who inspires you and why? Someone who inspires me is my mother. As a single parent she goes through all the difficulties of parenthood by herself. Her courage and love continue to be a constant source of inspiration.
What made you decide to join GAB? I decided to join the Girl Advisory Board so that I could take a larger leadership role among girls in our group. I want younger girls in Girl Scouts to aspire to be on the Advisory Board.
What has been your favorite Girl Scout experience? My favorite Girl Scout experience has been the troop project that my troop does yearly. We make scarves for a local community home. The best part is listening to Christmas carols and just being with each other.
What is your favorite quote? “Overcome the notion that you must be regular. It robs you of the change to be extraordinary.”-Uta Hagen
Vice Chair: Samantha Siciliano
Who inspires you and why? Selena Gomez inspires me because she uses her popularity to help charities like UNICEF. The way she helps other people inspires me to also help people.
What made you decide to join GAB? I joined GAB because I wanted to help create programs for Girl Scouts in the community, meet new people, and to have a new Girl Scout Experience.
What has been your favorite Girl Scout experience? My favorite Girl Scout Experience was when I went to Morey’s Pier. At Morey’s Pier I camped on the sandy beach. My mom and I enjoyed going on rides, walking the pier, playing in the ocean and collecting seashells. If it wasn’t for Girl Scouts, I would not have had that experience.
What is your favorite quote? “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”-Dr. Seuss
Secretary: Julia Pressley
Who inspires you and why? JK Rowling because she was a single mom & had a rough life but kept pursuing her dreams even though she would get rejected. I look up to her because I want to be a writer.
What made you decide to join GAB? I want to help create a better world for future generations. I believe in making things better for others, not just yourself.
What has been your favorite Girl Scout experience? Girl Scout Camp. I love the outdoors and Hidden Lake Camp. I made some amazing friends at camp this summer and met up with them again over Winter break.
What is your favorite quote? “Aut viam iveniam aut faciam.” (I’ll either find a way, or make one.)
Treasurer: Annabel O’Neill
Who inspires you and why? My parents inspire me because they always looked out for what was best for me. They never discouraged me from anything I wanted to do. They pushed when I need to be pushed and helped when I needed help. They have set a perfect example for me.
What made you decide to join GAB? I joined GAB because I wanted to get more programs that interested me and my scouts in my community. I think I can make a positive effect in Girl Scouting and local communities.
What has been your favorite Girl Scout experience? My favorite Girl Scout experience was when I went to Mexico to visit one of the four Girl Scout World Centers. I got to meet new sisters and the center had many fun team building activities prepared for us.
What is your favorite quote? “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”-Eleanor Roosevelt
