This spring, three of our high school level Girl Scouts had the opportunity to spend three full days with a female legislator. In those three days, the girls were able to sit on in session, committee meetings, constituent meetings, lobbyist meetings, press conferences, and work with staff behind the scenes.
Last evening, each girl presented an issue which they learned about in their time at the Capital, how they would solve it a legislative level, how they would gain advocates, and who their potential opposition would be. They also focused on women in government. Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk, Senator Little, and Assembly member Fahy participated, with Senator Tkaczyk and Assembly member Fahy attending last night, and Mary Pat McDonald from Senator Little’s office.
This program while small, which extremely impactful, with two of the three girls continuing on as interns for their representatives this summer. We firmly believe you can not be what you can’t see, and by giving girls opportunities to reach beyond their own perceptions and limits, they can truly achieve anything.
We hope to see more girls participate from across the state next Spring!
