On Saturday December 8th, 4 Girl Scouts, 1 volunteer, and 1 staff member piled into a Girl Scout van and began an 8 hour trip towards Washington DC. 350 miles, 1 really big bridge, 8 toll booths, 3 stops at rest areas, a harrowing trip on the Garden State Parkway, and 1 valet parking snafu later they had reached their destination safely! None could decide who they were more excited to see – Mr. President, Barack Obama, the esteemed First Lady Michelle Obama, or Bo, man’s best friend and the White House pet (though no sightings were reported). The girls dressed in their finest attire enjoyed a short tour of the White House. When asked if any of them would like to be President or what the first thing they would do as President would be, they said – that job would be too stressful! Little do they know, Barack Obama probably felt the same way as a teen!
Up with the sun the next morning, the girls and their chaperones enjoyed a quick breakfast before setting out to get pictures of the grand palace they had toured the night before, the White House. After taking in the sites, asking a secret service member for a picture near his car, and assuring themselves that indeed the structure they were building in front of the White House was a stage for the upcoming inauguration of President Obama for his second term (not a Starbucks and not a stage for Justin Bieber as a security guard had suggested the night before), they readied for the long trip back to New York. After 8 more hours of driving, countless sightings of wacky drivers on the Garden State Parkway, and a 20 degree drop in temperature, they found themselves safely back home in the arms of loved ones with many fun and funny stories to share! Here are a few pictures from the trip!
Many thanks to Marisa, Anzala, and Lisa who made the trip possible; for Sue Whalen our Adult Volunteer; Ariyana, Allison, Lauren, and Ciera (our 4 girl representatives); and Theresa our staff member. It was a memorable trip for all!
